1. Salmon
Salmon is one of my favorite health foods. It is a great source of protein and omega-3 fatty acids - which has been shown to decrease LDL cholesterol and raise HDL cholesterol. Omega-3 fatty acids have also been linked with other health benefits such as reducing risk for cancer and arthritis.
2. Soy
Soy is a great substitute for animal products. Soy beans contain high amounts of protein, are rich in calcium, iron, zinc, phosphorus, magnesium, B vitamins, omega 3 fatty acids, and fiber.
3. Greens
Green vegetables such as kale, chard, collard greens, bok choy, broccoli, asparagus, etc. are packed with vitamins A and C, iron, calcium and phytonutrients. They are high in fiber so they are filling with very little to no calories. Eaten raw or cooked they are a great addition to any meal or snack and are absolutely essential for anyone trying to loose weight.
4. Berries
Berries are my absolute favorite fruit! They are loaded with vitamin C, folate, fiber and phytonutrients. They are one of the most powerful disease fighting foods because they are so rich in antioxidants. Toss them in your breakfast cereal to start the day with a power packed food!
5. Whole Grains
Whole grains have so many wonderful components. They are rich in B vitamins, Vitamin E, magnesium, iron and fiber. They are delicious and filling. I recommend trying some different grains such as quinoa, kasha, or barley They are just as easy to cook as rice and are so delicious!
